I have to agree with that last line 100%.
Personally speaking I'm agreeing with many points made here, including some well made points by Benjy & Burg.
But I think Benjy only hit on the one subject, the part about SteveT getting carried away over his 1st time experience with thai women. He did seem to be taken in as we all are but we all know the gf experience can seem magical to the 1st timer, but I do think SteveT had other reasons for his post, he had his imagination well & truly captured by the holiday as a whole, as most of us here have also felt.
Phuket does have a great ambience and vibe which is hard to describe.
As for the violence, I do agree that in the trourist areas, fights are pretty rare, but I was referring to the ''underworld'' of thailand. Things that the average tourist don't usually hear about or see. There is a sinister edge to thailand lurking in the background.
I once took a bg from pattaya to patong to show her somewhere new, at first she was interested in a possible move to phuket as she liked the place so much on first impressions, after talking to many locals she changed her mind rapidly and told me she would rather stay in pattaya. When I asked why she replied ''too much mafia here''.
Often is the case, all is not what it seems.
