Strangely enough, i have an opinion of this. LOL. From a dance music purists standpoint, yes it sucks **** on Phuket. Tired old tunes, a lack of understanding in how to build a vibe etc.
I've been out to some venues and heard blinding hard acid techno dropped into a rock tune etc, top 40 dross heaped upon more more crap.
Half the trouble is the poor DJs play on piss poor equipment that prevents them mixing songs properly and the other half of the problem is there are so many competing tastes. You've got people up on current dance music mixed with old farts who like their rock n roll and the BGs who like their big sugar-coated Thai ballads. It's hard to please everyone, it's like playing weddings.
The local DJs can't afford to search out and buy new music and tend to rely on what farangs bring into the place. I left in March and gave a local DJ about 100 of my tunes and then 3 months later sat down at Scooby Bar to hear about 70% of the songs he played were the ones I'd left his mate. At least i like the music that night. Haha.
I haven't DJ'd much in Thailand but I'm coming back in december on a one-way ticket to try to carve out a niche for myself. If the music starts to sound better after December it may well be me. <jokes>
