I booked in June for my November trip to Bangkok on China Airlines. When I tried to arrange my selections for my coach seats, I was informed that they only assign coach seats at airport check-in. Unacceptable! When I called their customer service they told me all international air carriers assign their coach seats at check-in. When I sent them an email about the situation they did not even have the courtesy acknowledge my email. I cancelled my reservation with China ($100 penalty) and booked EVA Evergreen service. Learned my lesson...
