The loss of face part is hitting the nail firmly on the head.. By indicating (in front of others) that you wanted Girl2 then Girl1 who already stayed with you and would feel she has some kind of claim on you looks second best.. add in the fact that a more experienced 'senior' girl losing out to a more nieve 'jounier' girl and thats also a factor..
Not much can be done about this kind of madness especially once late nights drink etc gets all put into the mix..
