I first went to Ayia Napa in 1980 when it was just 3 bars, a restaurant, a monastary and a little inlet with a few fishing boats! Same as Fig Tree Bay around Cape Kata there and it was just one bar, owned by two brothers (Two very rich Brothers now!) and feel it is a shame.

I went back in 1999 and 2002 and hardly recognised the place, I know money talks etc but what a transformation! Big party atmosphere, but everything that goes with that! Punch ups, Squaddies banned from Ay Nik and Dhekelia, people throwing up in the street and the Cypriots and the local Police just looking on bemused that these people had flown 5-6 hours to pretty much do what they do every weekend in the UK and elsewhere! I know they are in the sunshine, booze is cheap and plentiful (as are other substances same as Ibiza!) and Mum and Dad probably still at home! I even saw a Cypriot Anti-Aids demonstration walking through all this, consisting of Mothers of young Cypriot men they reckon had contracted Aids by sleeping with the tourists and had infected what was once an Aids free island! I know, I know! To be perfectly honest I couldn't wait to get back inland to some of my favourite little villages, drink Keo and eat lovely homemade food out there and just chill out without all the crap going on down at the beach! I'm getting old I know!

I am guessing there are quite a few Thai folk feel the same about Patong! I really do hope it does not deteriorate into what I saw in Cyprus. Cyprus is a lovely Island as is Phuket but I am guessing we cannot bury our heads in the sand and just hope that these people will just go away.
