Good story! So typical. But that is not what white trash means in the US, which is where the term comes from. White trash applies to men just as much as women, and it applies to white people born into the lower social classes, whose parents had little education, and were not able to advance very far in life.
White trash usually live in poor neighborhoods and often in trailer parks, thereby getting the name, "Trailer trash," which means the same as white trash.
Also white trash are sort of like mutts. Their heritage is predominantly English, but often with many other bits and pieces mixed in. There are some people you would never call white trash. For example, if someone was 100% Italian heritage, you would not usually call them white trash, even if they were idiots, and never if they maintained any semblance of their italian heritage, and cultural values.
White trash implicitly denotes poor breeding. Anyone who was 100% of any ethnicity would not qualify as white trash. White trash tend to be the descendants of the English who were brought here out of the debtor's prisons in colonial times, or as came as indentured servants, but over two centuries have mixed in with other nationalities, especially(but not limited to) Scottish, Irish, French, and German. Since they were the lowest of the English, they were essentially the dregs of that gene pool. They are those who have been mired in poverty and ignorance for many generations, and never had enough good sense, intelligence and/or fortitude to rise above their humble beginnings.
Being white trash also implies crass cultural values. Occasionally, a white trash gal, due to looks, shrewdness, or good luck will rise to a greater economic level, especially if she is a fox who marries a guy with money. But because of her lack of culture and questionable values, she will always be seen as "white trash with money." Once you are white trash, it is difficult to rise above it, and only the best of them manage to do so. But poor people who have good values, and seriously attempt to improve themselves are not usually considered white trash.
My ex-brother-in-law was classic white trash. My ex-sister-in-law really seemed to rise above humble beginnings, smart, got a good education, good job, but when she started cheating on my brother-in-law, for no good reason, (he is a good guy, good father, good husband,and treated her well), then it could be said that her "white trash" roots had surfaced. They said, "Nice gal, but she was really only white trash to begin with, so perhaps we expected too much of her!"
