It's not just the ME Andy, I've seen that all over the world, well, maybe not the handbags but the German blokes carry some pretty big wallets with straps that are not bum bags (Sorry US readers - Fanny packs!!)

Hand holding between two blokes in most of Africa, Turkey, China and Eastern Europe, particularly the Balkans just means they are mates and it doesn't carry the Gay Label it carrys in our neck of the woods. It does look unusual and even two French blokes kissing each other in greeting looks a bit femme to us, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are slipping each other the salami!

Out here it invariably does but then again, a camel is fair game here!
