Carry on luggage is getting the point where it is a joke. I have been on a Thai Airways flight in business class where spare seats where used to carry suitcases. I forget how many regs that flight violated.

Take this as a warning though, with the introduction of larger aircraft, like the new A380 and the next generation 747, airlines will have no option but to enforce strict carry on rules, otherwise they will be sacrificing freight uplift. Freight earns more revenue to an airline than carrying passengers does, so they don't like doing that.

I know of a flight, where the captain refused to leave the gate, unless 1000kgs was unloaded from the cabin. The cabin looked like a department store back dock. Not only was it extremely dangerous, but would've put the aircraft very close to MTOW (maximum take off weight). The gate staff received a very good talking too.
