In the UK, if you are genuinely out of work and need social security, you are made to jump hoops for next to nothing. Its around £50 a week for a single person and £90 for a married couple.
Add in the factor of children and the wife working part-time (taking home £90 a week for 16hrs work and you get the precise sum of .............. nothing So it pays for the wife not to work and this is where things go badly wrong.
You then find that there are married couples with lots of children receiving all the benefits (child allowance, tax credits, housing benefit, etc) where it reaches the point that they can bring home more if they dont work
The welfare state in the UK is the biggest drain on the budget. Can you believe we spend more on unemployment, pensions etc than we do on transport or defence or education.
It makes me seeth to witness such a dreadful state of affairs in this country

well, 1st off guys, i was totally joking. i had just finished reading my benefits form, and then thought of the discussions from JH thread.

and, actually this disablity pay i was talking about is private through my company's insurer which i pay a premium. if i was to "genuinely" be disabled, id recieve 5700cdn/mo.
i had the same type of disablity from my company in the states.and i dont know if this is true for canada, but if i was genuinely disabled id also be able to collect govt social sec each month. and that is based on the amount of money you have made, hence the money you paid into the system, but the last statement i recieved, i believe was 3400usd/mo.

thats all talking about being disabled.

now if you just get laid off in the staes you get to collect 9 months of unemployment. and there is a 50% chance you can extend it for another 9 months which not much effort. that is also based on what your salary was.
i got "laid off"(i asked my company to lay me off, had no interest in going to work for UBS who just bought my division) i got 2000usd/mo
also, another thign that is different from the UK is that you could have 10mil in the bank and you are still entitled to that unemployment, whereas in the UK i heard if you have the smallest amount of money in the bank you cannot collect. also, i didnt have ot do anything but log onot interent every 2 weeks and answer 6 questions. which i did from LOS.
i wasnt going to, but i gave you guys personal money figures because felt it gave a perspective between countries
