If you used the card successfully on that occasion, i.e. you did get money out, then the only way that you could have been "stung" was by there being a "skimmer" on top of the ATM machine, or by you not taking your receipt with you. You would not have been done by the ATM or the shop if it was one of these like you get in 7/11.
A "skimmer" is a card-reader which is placed over the slot where you put the card in to the ATM. When you put the card in to the machine, you pass it through the card-reader as well and that's how your number will have been obtained. The other way with the receipt, is to simply read the number from it.
A couple of things to note here...
1. always take you receipt with you and never throw it on the floor or in a bin. Nowadays more and more banks are changing what is written on the receipt so that it doesn't give away sensitive information, but why take the chance ??
2. check the ATM before you use it and by that I mean give it a right old bashing as these things are sturdily built and if anything seems out of place or loose, then don't use it !!

Another trick is to put cameras on the sides of the ATM wall so that the scammers can see you PIN and then reconcile it to the card-reader details, hene they then get your card number and PIN. Remember that you can buy cameras today that are tiny and can be placed very subtly so that you are not suspicious.
If in doubt - don't.
