With the car thing, it would be a HUGE adventure in itself, but i would be very careful. The roads in and out of BKK are nuts, like nothing i have ever seen, so you might not be used to it, as well as the fact i think they drive on the other side of the road. You could do it but it would be pretty nuts.
I went to Hua Hin from BKK, which is only a 3 hour drive, but some of the driving i saw was crazy, and i think there were about 2 crashes which we saw on the way down.
