Today I got an email from a girl I met on my last tour. We have exchanged quite a few emails since I got back last November but they have been very few and far between for the last month. She claims that her mother has cancer and has to have an operation. Although she did not make any request for money I can feel it coming very soon as she said she would 'write me' when she gets home to see her.
Although this could very well be a genuine case there are many reasons for me not to believe her. Reasons which I will not go into now but really convinces me that this is not a genuine case.
However I did reply to her sending my sympathy and wished her mother a speedy recovery.
In order to help me avoid the 'banana skins' when the request for money comes, does anyone know what the healthcare situation is like in LOS. In other words would her mother get free public medical care if she did have to have an operation. Btw her mother lives in Bangkok.
Perhaps she wont request any money from me and perhaps her mother does have cancer but I really doubt that either one of these is the case. Better to be prepared IMHO.
