Warning: stay away from S. Thailand!
Yeah, you are right about that Mike!
I'm from S. California and the threat of terrorism is a distance but the sentiment is very strong due to 9/11 and the current war that our current administration is waging in Iraq. The situation of terrorism in Thailand is somewhat odd... I read an article in the BKK Post today regarding the issue. The Muslims in T.L are creating havoc because they want to separate from the mother land. Aren't they all Thais? Maybe, the Thai-Muslims are some how discriminant against but they should learn to use different means to have a voice in politic.
A word of advice for all Thai-Muslims: You all should be proud as citizens of a country in the region that held back colonialism. If you break away from the mother land, two Thailands will not be as strong as today. You are all E. Asians not Arab-fundamentalists. Maybe, there's a common religion but nowadays, religion shouldn't be a problem. Try to push for a complete separation of religion and state in Thai politic. There was an issue here in the States; a civil servant, a judge (I think) tried to place a sculpture of Jesus at his work place, a public place. He was canned from his job because he refused to give up the idea. This is what you should push for --> a complete separation of religion and state matters.
Enough said... If I will decide to go to Phuket I will just have to take extra precaution...
Enjoy..
