long distance calling?

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the newbie or expats area. I am moving to Thailand, which I suppose will make me an expat, however I have never posted before, so I decided I'd better post as a newbie. I have been following the forums for a few weeks now, absorbing much needed information, and figured I might as well jump in. My boyfriend and I are coming to Thailand on March 14. We'll be in Bangkok for 4 days before heading to Phuket for some diving, then back up to Chiang Mai to work at the Elephant Nature park for a week. After that, we plan to travel around a bit and decide where we would like to settle. We are pretty sure we'd like to settle on the Andaman coast side for the diving. My boyfriend is a dive instructor and of course, would like to work where the diving is best. Many people have advised that Koh Lanta would be a great place to live and work because it's very quiet and laid back, in-expensive, and working conditions are good. My only concern there is that we would like to spend time in temples and furthering our buddhist practice with monks and/or buddhist teachers, and I'm told that Koh Lanta's vast majority is Muslim instead of Buddhist. Could anyone offer advice on these matters? Also, what do you guys do for long distance calling from Thailand? (I would be calling the U.S.) I am researching the vonage system, but what are my other options? And finally, what operation would you recomend for a dive trip for a couple of days to the Similans? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer and for all the great info you provide for us newbies all the time. I look forward to meeting you once we arrive.
