Judging by my own experience i would highly recomend you wait until you can go with your wife/gf to the embassy also i would recomend you go and get a thai lawyer i payed £130 and for that they translated all her papers into english and also someone went with her to the embassy and sat in on the interview with her, i was asked in and asked 2 pointless questions, i have since had 2 friends who used the same lawyer both were succesful in their applications. The lawyer i used was the bangkok law centre on the junction of sukhumvit soi 1. To be honest its just your luck who does your interview i found that on my first 2 unsuccseful attempts i got female staff who were complete *****es, who were determined to get my wife to trip up thats why i used a lawyer 3rd time and also i got a male interviewer who was not so bad.
i did not have to produce bank statements only proof of full time occupation, proof of accomadation and documents to prove long term correspondence between us
