I know that it's not the theme of this thread but I have to agree that if there is one thing lacking in Patong etc it's metered taxis. Many Asian tourist areas have them, even Bali. It is nice just to jump in an airconditioned vehicle and see what you are paying as you go. Just give the driver a nice sling at the end and he is happy. Always used them in Bali before I became a Phuket convert and they were cheaper than the negotiated fare vehicles so you were happy to tip well.

Is there a reason why they are not prevalent in Phuket?
