Second thing is to say 'nothing can be done' is a bit odd to me ?? I guess that it was meant that nothing thats financially viable can be done as the horses racing carear is likely to be over.. Surely horses can heal from broken bones if they are cared for properly ?? Wasnt that even the thing with Seabiscuit ??

When a horse breaks a leg during racing, then it's near on a certainty that the vet will terminate the horse's life, in the best interests of the horse. This has absolutely nothing to do with costs, loss of money or anything else. It is done purely on a "what is best for the horse" scenario.
These injuries are not like hairline fractures and therefore basically untreatable.
With regards to Seabiscuit, I don't recall him ever breaking any of his legs. The horse was born with crooked legs and walked in an odd way plus was a lot smaller than other horses.
