My credit card company has a computer program that generates what they call a virtual credit card number. This is a card number that it tied to my real credit card and is billed to my real credit card. The virtual card number expires the month after it is issued. The idea is if your credit card info is stolen at a later date the virtual card number will have already expired and be worthless. I typically generate a new virtual card number for anything I purchase on the Internet.
Hope that makes sense. I never was able to make the Taiwan based airlines understand the concept even though I had my credit card bill that showed the ticket purchase and the virtual number. They had never heard of virtual card numbers. But it was my fault for not noticing that the card that made the ticket purchase must be presented at the counter.
