Even if they didn't know English well, it would be easier for them to get a dictionary and attempt to write words in English than to bastardize their own language by trying to write it with foreign symbols.
If you were trying to write something in English to a Thai person, would you use Thai letters to phonetically sound it out? Not likely.

Absolutly right i guess.A few weeks ago i wrote my GF a Thai phrase in roman letters and she had absolutly no idea of what i wrote. Everything written in english she can look in her book but a thai phrase in roman letters she does not know how to deal with
