A 6MB RAW file is a 6MB RAW file, the data from the sensors wrapped up in a proprietary format.
I'm presuming that you are talking about images that were shot on film and scanned, that's why they are so large. 48MB is not actually that big, I think they can be 60-70MB.
Also, for digital I have read an article (that I am yet to find again!) that mentioned resampling digital images to make them up to the size that magazines/libraries want. PS will resample for you - just go to Image Size and there is an option for resampling that allows you to
increase the image size
