My little 2 cents.
I've never been to Thailand... yet. My closest thing so far has been to Singapore and a couple of days in Kuala Lumpur besides lurking around here on the message boards from time to time. Anyway, I had an absolute blast during my nearly two week trip to Singapore earlier this year. My only comment is regarding the costs of "fun" here in New York City (not even Manhattan but even just like places in Queens) versus costs there in Thailand. Like I said, even though I haven't been to Thailand, I've been told that it's much cheaper there than Singapore and Malaysia. In less than 2 weeks I've burnt just shy of 4,000 USD while I was there and I felt that it was completely worth it. I've been dumb enough to "go out" with some friends here to drink in Manhattan's Korean "room saloons" and burned about 600 dollars for just talking to girls without any expectations of getting them in the sack (it's really up to them whether they'll go with you or not, it's not straight prostitution and there are girls who just don't sleep with any customers). The really sad part? I don't drink.
Now, I don't make a lot of money and I'm far far FAR from retiring and I don't care about living in Thailand at all. After all, I've yet to go there. My only point is, if you spent just 2,000 dollars for the month living a vacation lifestyle and you weren't working... I'd say "Wow, that's cheap!"
