All these changes will effectively make it a lot more difficult for expats to live in Thailand. I always go to penang to renew my NON-B every year and this is bad news for me. I could apply for one year extension but I never did because I enjoy my visa runs and it also involves more reuirements and paperwork. (When I looked into one year extensions few years ago I also heard the officials required 'tea money' to grant the extension, I don't know if this is the case today.)

Guess I will have to look into one year extension again.
