Visa Runs

I'm hoping to move to LOS soon for about a year, just to bum around and take it easy. I plan on living cheaply and enjoying some sunshine for a bit.

The one thing putting me off is visa runs. I know, I know, search, search, search. I have searched, but what I'm finding ain't good - long, expensive visa runs every month doesn't sound much fun to me. Is there anyone already out there who has done the same as I'm planning? If so, can you tell me how you get round the problem of visas? Will I HAVE to do monthly runs? What if I don't? Presumably there are backpackers that stay in the country longer than a month - what do they do? It also seems rather expensive - about 3000 baht inc long, uncomfortable bus ride if I've worked it out right - that would put a massive drain on my resources, which are limited to say the least.

What a crazy situation - why is it so restrictive? It can't be as difficult, expensive and restrictive as it sounds, can it?
