There was a really funny story in the local paper when I was in Pattaya (well it made me laugh anyway). This Swiss bloke gets completely paralytic and takes 3 LBs back to his hotel for a 'party'. Some people he knows see him staggering up the street with them, think it's dodgy and call the police. The police turn up at the hotel and head for the bloke's room. In the corridor they cop one of the LBs coming out of the room with the bloke's mobile phone. In the room, they find the bloke passed out in bed with the other two. They search the LB's bags and find a necklace worth 30,000 baht, which belongs to the bloke.

The funny bit is the last paragraph, where one of the LBs gives her side of the story:

"One of the accused, Mr Wirapong Saensuk, said that the Swiss gentleman had invited them back to his hotel for a room party which was in full swing when police interrupted the proceedings. In the confusion, Mr. Wirapong may have accidentally grabbed the jewellery and popped it in his shoulder bag for safe keeping, he claimed."

Marvellous.

He/she would have then taken it to the nearest gold shop for even safer keeping
