On the say so of a couple of BMs here, you have decided to go to Phuket and not Pattaya. I really do think you should go to Bangkok, rest up and look around for a couple of days, and then plan out a short tour of Thailand to check the place out. Start perhaps with Pattaya, 1.5 hrs taxi drive from Bangkok, stay for a week or so then perhaps fly down to Phuket and look around there. Then maybe go up north to Chang Mai for a few days, you may prefer it there, finally fly back to Bangkok and think about it.
Don't want to p1ss on your party, but its a helluva big step to be taking.

Have a good read in the Expat forum here, lots of tips and ideas. Also a good thread by an English guy who moved here last Sept and has posted a bit of a diary about living in Phuket and some of the pitfalls.

I wish you luck and success with your plans.

Hi Lostgringo...this is good advice from Dawsey...My husband and I are also retiring to Phuket for a year or two and also have a thread in Expats regarding our impending move...which is sheduled for 26th September...

One thing is if you find the heat a bit much...it may be cooler in Chaing Mai...other BMs may be able to comment on this as I havne't been to Chaing Mai personally.
