The staff in Rio are very laid back, which I like. But this can cause a problem with the service. I have been there when many a customer has become irate due to what they percieve as bad service. But from my point of view, its not bad service, its just not Western standard service. From which I mean the there is no 'rush rush rush' and the day manager does not make her self seperate from the rest of the staff.

Im not trying to Yank bash, but this is very true with alot of newbie Americans, who from what I see live in a very much a service society back home and imply there on standards on the rest of the world. So when the waitress gets asked "Is that Spanish rice or chinease rice?", they don't have a clue what they are talking about (Nor do I!). So Thai's being Thai's, they just nod and say yes in most cases, or ignore the question. Of course when the food comes, the customer complains more. In the end I left due to the shouting that was going on, and the agression of these customers to staff and onlookers trying to help.

I myself, have never had 'bad service' in Rio that I can remember. But that my be because most of the girls know me so well now that the first people that say hello when I reach PAtong, are the Rio girls when I get out of the taxi on the opposite side of the road! Or maybe its because I dont have that mile high expectations with service in non 4-5 star hotel restaraunts?

Could Larry improve this service? Yes, but its costs alot more to higher a western manager all the time (I will forward my CV!), or a Thai who can speak and understand English!
you may be right. i dont know how it goes in UK, but service his held to a high standard in the states and maybe it carrys over. although it is thailand i do think the service should be better in most places.
people give excuses for service, saying its not the west, but in most cases, its just outright laziness, pure and simple
i saw it 1st hand at wet willy's day in and day out for almost a year. the girls would sit around and play cards all day and if they had more then 2 customers in the palce theyd start to pout that theyd have to do work, and they werent unique when it comes to service in thailand
