Nice trick with the wallets. Never heard of that one before.
Patong is very safe. But there are some strange ones that hang out around the beach at night. However, when people get so blitzed that they don't remember anything about the night before, that's when they might wake up missing money or have a lump on the head. In my limited experience, I have found the farangs to be a lot more dangerous than the Thais, because some farangs are very aggressive and hot-headed when drunk, and occasionally even when not drunk. Thais seem to be more cool, more under control, and when drunk are "happy" drunks. Of course, as has been pointed out before, never start trouble with the Thais, because although they are very peaceful, if a farang starts the trouble, then they will finish it.
