I'm not sure that applies here - the likes of sawasdee and phuket.com aren't buying up all the rooms and reselling rather they get a cut of the bookings I imagine. It's a good point about the walk-ins and so on but if you phone up the hotel quoting them the price I don't see what they gain by turning you down and certainly they lose something.
