Believe me Kev they have tried to blow that bloody bank up several times. They have had the sense now to spread thier assets around town. Not sure there is that much money here anyway, I'm lead to believe it's in other countries bordering here! Could be wrong.
Shortly after the troubles they divided the country geographically into three and gave three GSM providers a region (Each regions population was of a similar size) under the proviso that after one year of trading the company offering the best tax dividend to the Iraqi tax collector would get the 'whole' country as the prize.
That hasn't been the case, the three main service providers (Atheer, Orascom/Iraqna and AsiaCell) are still here and although the services they provide are much of a muchness there is now a better 'cross-network' service.
To have a pre-paid SIM now is difficult due to peoples lack of payment. You apply in writing and have to provide passport pictures etc. Top up SIMs and Scratch off cards are freely available at the Haji markets.
GSM towers used to be blown up regularly by the AIF as they were seen as a Western influence. They now leave them alone as they 'spot' and adjust mortar fire onto targets and obviously detonate remote devices using GSM phones.
I think it is going to get much, much worse Kev to be honest. I'll stick to buying my VAT Free gold Sovereigns and keeping them under the floorboards!  I bought (a few!!) for GBP88 a year ago and have been offered GBP125 for them. I'll hang on to them a bit longer as I like counting them by candlelight, wearing fingerless mitts, central heating off and muttering humbug to myself now and again! 555555
