Whilst I dont agree or disagree with the practise of charging joiner fees, it is a generally accepted business practise in Thailand. Does this make it robbery, I dont think so. Any business anywhere in the world will attempt to increase the bottom line by using whatever ways they can get away with.

There are some practises which western companies employ which could also be deemed robbery. Its a common theme that westerners see the different attitudes Thai's have to doing business which is very much different from western ways, as being illegal, cheating or robbery.

In this case there is any easy option for anyone to avoid these charges, and that is dont stay in these properties that charge it.
