I know its been touched on before,but I wouldn't even consider staying in ANY hotel that didn't have a pool.
In the Phuket climate,its a must,and I wouldn't be too keen to have to walk down the road to another swimmning pool either.

Going back to PV, if there is a guest charge now, then the owner (I forget his name now) must have weighed up whether putting this charge on and losing potential customers was worth the risk.

As Stevem said ,the western hotels use all kind of ploys to extract extra money out of visitors,the worst in my mind being charging per person in a room. And don't forget how much we pay for a room outside of LOS!!
£40 for a crappy Travel Lodge room makes the £20/£25 for some of these lovely rooms in LOS that much more of a bargain.
