It was said tongue in cheek but yes it does work as the hot air produced rises taking the fog with it and yes they used to do it during the war.
I doubt it wouldmake it past the Risk Assessment and Enviromental Impact study LoL!
If I was waiting 2 days to fly to LOS I would fly THROUGH a diesel fire!
