Sure Vista is better than XP on the UI side, but for compatibility and bug issues I would recommend non-techies to stick with XP for a while. For someone just needing a laptop for school, Vista doesn't let them do anything more. May actually cause some problems if they need to run special software for some courses.

You just know black hats are going to try and poke many holes into vista over the next few months.
