You hit the nail on the head right here. I actually wouldn't recommend a Mac to an average user. They're great for graphic artists, filmmakers and musicians, but users have to enjoy getting under the hood and tweaking things a bit to see any real advantage to the OS.
On the down side, the lack of software choices is still somewhat of an issue (though you can run Windows OS on the new models and get the best/worst of both worlds).
And you'll always have fewer options available if you need outside help. I'm no fan of the Apple store in Phuket - but I have no other choice if I need someone to mess with the innards.
Though being safe from viruses without 3rd-party software is a big plus. No defrags needed either. System maintenance is a breeze. And you avoid a lot of other issues by being on the fringe - not using Internet Explorer, not putting up with Microsoft's enforced online system maintenance and "Windows Genuine (dis)Advantage".
