Just a matter of living here for a while. You can feel the temp drop and a slight chill in the air before it rains. The air is a little cleaner smelling. Then the type of clouds and how it is raining gives you a feel for how long and hard it will rain for.
But the real reason is thai people are solar powered.
They get sleepy when it is about to rain and start looking for a comfortable place to nap. More sleepy = rain longer. If it rains late afternoon into the early evening, forget about the bars as the girls are down for the night.
