It was 20-30 mins from the chalong circle to patong. Now add another 10-15 minutes going in due to patong's one way system, sansabi being opened as a through street, and lack of sansabi parking. It takes about 10-20 minutes to get to Simon Caberet, after that it is a total guessing game on how long it will take to get around patong and find parking.
Problem is it is a tricky drive. Lots of hills and curves. Lots of dark areas. Lots of drunks on motorbikes. I know two people this month that have that were in accidents coming back. Resulted in 1 dead thai and 3 seriously injured. Moral issues aside, that will cost a few million baht to clean that up. Given all of the above, I'm looking for a driver for my bi-weekly play time.
The up side to living over on this side is it is a lot quieter. Lots of good bars for a quick drink with friends. Great restaurants for a reasonable price. 10 minutes to Central/Lotus/BigC. You are more likely to pop into phuket town, rawai, or kata for fun. Seems that if you live in patong you kinda get stuck there.
2 of my neighbors are patong refugees like myself. We're about the same age and all spent a few years in patong. decided it is better to have a good general quality of life and then just pop back into patong when you are in the mood.
So if like the poster said, you are not that interested in getting fall down drunk and hooking up every night, staying out chalong way could work very well for you. Otherwise best to stay in patong.
