The reason is: marriage is un-natural. It exists for the sake of upbringing the new generation and for economical reasons. Since the human race has made that leap forward in relation to other similar to him mammals, the problem arose of who was to take the responsibility of bringing up the children + how was the private fortune be handleded to the next generation.
Some societies (now extinct) chose the more open option of a communal life where the concept of husband and wife was very loose and the responsibility fell upon every member of the society. Other societies have chosen the triangular family (mom, dad, children) with some variations (christians, muslims, buddhists etc.)
Putting two individuals exclusively together for the rest of their lives is something that most mammals will not stand, at least when there is a choice. I think this only works with doves and other simpler animals who are genetically programmed to function this way
The reason why this does not work for us is our sexual drive. Especially in primates it is very strong and not coupled with a similar drive to stick with one partner for the rest of our lifetime. This is where the economical part comes in: as a perfect incentive to suppress our unlimited sex drive. Doesn`t anyone agree that marriage gets better when economic security is there? It makes it at least more bearable...
Of course friendship and other factors between the couple play also a leading role in the outcome of a marriage, but one thing is certain: sex gets boring after some time if practiced with one person exclusively.
Therefore regarding the views of whether a couple should be faithful to each other, it`s really a matter a choice that preferibly both lovers should make, openly and sincerely. It`s a matter of how two people want to deal with a lifestyle that opposes their true nature. Some people prefer or have simply learned to lie to themselves and others, while other people choose the risky way of opposing hundreds of years of culture and tradition.
No rights or wrongs here, just natural tendencies and the way we choose to deal with them.
