Stunned you got away.. here they would throw you in the cells.. seen it happen with my own eyes even when cops admitted it was probably a scam (we see this owner say same thing many times) even if its a scam they cant prove it.. You take a bike uninsured you have to pay the value of it if its nicked or you lose it... If it was your bike and it was nicked and you had no insuirance thats what it would cost you !! Why should it be any different when its someone elses.

That's pretty much what they kept telling me - "if you borrow your friends bike and it's stolen , what would you do?"

I write contracts across international borders as part of my job. If the rental T&C had said I was liable I would have paid it. It didn't, so I wouldn't. I was amazed they had no cover. You hire a car from hertz and it gets nicked and you have paid the insurance within the cost of rental then Hertz's insurers pick it up.
If you want to make a living as an international touirist destination you should build in measures to suit. They hadn't but they should. If every scooter came with a 5% premium for theft & damage it would more than cover the insurance costs to the rental agent and give peace of mind to the hirer. basic contract law.

When I asked the police if it would be a criminal court or civil court they said civil. So I said ok you have 3 days to arrnge a hearing and no you can't have my passport.
