Actually the full joke was (when I used to bother)...They almost always said 'no'. you look relieved then say in thai "good it's the same as this" and hold up your pinky finger. laughing, confused, and curious. Stupid but it got me learning basic thai. Think of a new dumb joke, learn more words, repeat...
So learning stupid things for the bar was most practical application at the time
Now I very rarely say anything even remotely impolite anywhere. they think better of you.
