Although chai does often mean yes, in most cases it is the inappropriate answer. Example: If asked, "Mii condom, mai?" (Do you have a condom?), the correct answer, assuming you had a condom, would be "Mii." If the question was "Mii condom, chai mai?", the answer would be, "Chai," but that is a different question, i.e., "You have a condom, don't you?" So, in most cases, chai is the incorrect way to say yes. They would probably still understand you answer, but they would definitely think you were a "farang ngo."  BTW, if you didn't have a condom, when asked the first question, the correct answer would be "Mai mii."
