I have seen many negative comments about The West on this forum lately, especially BM talking about their own home country. First of all I am not so sure it (for most) is as negative as stated, but also sure that it is not a vacation like going to Thailand. Personally I love United States and if given no other opportunities I will be perfectly happy to grow old (up) and to die here.
When it comes to retirement though, a whole new set of possibilities open up for many people, including a lifetime holiday. In such case choosing to fully of partly move to Thailand is not out of the question, and it does not mean that you are adverse to where you came from.
I my case, I should be done saving for my retirement by year 2010, however, that leaves me 10 years to "get by" before I can start spending the money, which could mean a carrier change that could include a move to somewhere in SE Asia. Should I move to Asia, there will definitely be return trips home and in my case that will then be both Denmark and the United States.
