A decade is not enough....
... seriously, a big question is how you personally like to "move around". Some people need to stay put for a while before they are at all comfortable and some (like me) can move around constantly and be OK. That being said I would not recommend less than three days in any given place. One week in Phuket should be adequate especially if you have other places to go. Some people like to spend all their time in Bangkok and other at best travel through. If I were you and if you have time I would give it 3 (or so) days there. I don't know much about Vietnam, so you figure that one out, maybe other BM's can be of better assistance. The same counts for China, except to say .. it is pretty far away and you should consider that for another trip.
Going to Singapore seems to be a unique agenda; just make sure that you are as keen on that part as your friend. If not, perhaps he go there a bit longer than you and you can then catch up. Solo traveling in Thailand can be pretty adventurous.

I have answered your question with my own bias and a little bit of objectivity, however, you never expressed what you goals are; so here we go ... cart before the horse.
