Making it in Thailand.

Maybe this should be a new thread.

I guess a lot of us have dreams of relocating permenantly to a better lifestyle and not a few on this forum seem to have made it. Thats encouraging.

I hopped across the channel to live in the French Alps and it worked well for me but Thailand beckons (where I cant ski )....small price to pay.

Great life here but no good pretending its easy even with a good job/salary. The problems caused by cultural differences, required legal procedures and the like can sometimes seem insurmountable. It goes without saying that if you cant be bothered to learn the language...and I mean learn it by being unafraid to make a fool of yourself sometimes...then its a non-starter. Being in another country without the lanuage is like being in an exclusive club and never being a member.

Thai culture is very different to European culture (and god knows European cultures have their differences).

What Id like to know is : How many came to Thailand and later went back home for reasons other than finantial/health care and the like? The guys that actually missed a cold wet walk with the dog on a sunday afternoon. What was it that made them go back?

Id hate to relocate and find the same reasons hitting me, unprepared.
