From the Thai Consulate web site in Los Angeles:
*5. 4 copies of - bank statement showing a deposit at the amount not less than 800,000 Baht or an income certificate with a monthly salary of no less than 65,000 Baht or a deposit account plus a monthly income of no less than 800,000 Baht a year. (In the case of the bank statement, a letter from the bank verifying the account is to be presented). These documents must be notarized by notary public

According to the same consulate a non-immigrant "O" is for the purposes of visting a family. Further it says
*** Non-immigrant visas will not be issued for such purposes as tourism, seeking employment opportunities, looking for a school for teaching or studying purposes, etc.
So can you somehow get a non-immigrant "O" based on what? Something like preparing to retire?

This certainly seems to be the route to go which has been stated many times on this board.
