It also goes deep to the American mindset though... In America money buys status and more money buys more service.. The concept of tipping the barman big gets your drinks poured stronger and faster etc and permeates through everything.. The UK is still more hung up on a class system for status as opposed to a purely money system.
With the habit that the more you drop the better the service it makes some sense to think that the more you spend on a girl the better she will treat you this maybe true to some extent but I think it does not buy the respect that Americans often expect from it (eg the girls tend to think of the guy as dumb or mad rather than clever etc)..
