Interesting stereotypes flying around here... I'm not sure why there aren't so many Finns doing the expat thing here but there are plenty of tourists, I can assure you. In the busy season you only have to walk around in Kata/Karon and every other person you pass seems to be nattering on in Finnish. Personally I've found that wherever I go, even the most unlikely places like remote Indonesian islands, I always find Finns there. It's quite unnerving really. We do travel a lot, just not in great numbers as there aren't that many of us!

The Scandinavia thing - technically we are not Scandinavians and I will be the first to set anyone straight on that, but I confess that I do sometimes refer to myself as Scandinavian, just because I look the part. It's true that Finnish is a very different language from Swedish, Norwegian and Danish, but in other ways Finland really is not that different from those countries. I don't buy this 'more east than west' argument, that's just rubbish. Historically maybe but not in the modern day and age.

The English language question - most young Finns speak reasonably good English, but the older generation not so much. Perhaps that's another reason for the lack of Finnish expats of mature age here My mum & dad are in their sixties and only understand a little English, never would try to speak themselves. More's the pity as I am engaged to a Brit.

But yes, I also have only met one Finnish guy with a Thai girlfriend, and he's now gone off to Oz to work, all others have been tourists.
