I wouldn't worry to much about doing some of the newbie mistakes, because you will. And those experiences will likely be fantastic too. So who cares if you pay 500+ baht more the first few times just because the girls can sense the oportunity from a mile away, as long as you have fun.

Try to go into a few bars, - only with the goal of flirting a bit with a girl or two and the move to the next bar. You will find that on some occations you will be in and out with little interaction and on some occations it is tough to get out because the girls will not want you to leave. Remember if you get far enough that you have a bit of fun and joking around and you along the line you buy the girl a lady drink (or two), she too got some return on investment. They make commision on the lady drinks.

90% of these girls love to have fun and laugh. In many bars they will encourage to play a game of sort; which may lead to more lady drinks as you loose.

When I go out in Bangkok, my evening generally start at 8 PM and for the first couple of hours I put very little thought into finding a lady for the night; I only focus on having fun. As it get closer to midnight, I generally have made a natural connection and if not, then I change gear a bit.
