Sorry, didnt read all yer replies..
Have backpacked a lot of the world...wherein your money is a lot more vunerable...
I always do this...
NEVER take my wallet out 'on the town', just ample cash, or less if you wanna make yourself have a quiet nite.
One credit card and passport and vast majority of cash to hotel safe (pref with current balance slip next to it, that you recorded ,of course, and keep record in your diary/other spot in room), other c.card concealed in your room/bag along with photocopy of your passport. Surplus small cash , wallet in room or , if available , room safe, for emergencies.
Now whatever happens you have ( except for the p/port), a $ survival kit.
NOT to make you put your guard down BUT I have found Thailand to be very safe for this kind of thing and have never had a problem.
Friends biggest probs, usually pissed , is to leave their wallets somewhere or their ATM card in the machine (!!??) and then they ruin the next few days with angst!
Whaddya need a wallet for? I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYWHERE IN LOS THAT REFUSES CASH OR ASKS FOR YOUR ID!!! Lose $100 cash from your pocket and thats all you lost!
I have only ever heard of L/Bs near Nana doing a pick pocket job and have even had friends have their lost wallets returned to them...I feel safer there than many parts of Sydney, Australia...
