If people have taken a decision not to tell, have they any bright ideas about how to keep it a secret? I guess you could say that you were in e.g. Spain and that postcard was forgotten or lost, or use a web-based e-mail to send a message without disclosing its origins - any thoughts/experiences?

For me is the same, i'm single but i dont feel yours problems ...and i live in italy (where was the vatican... people like to talk bad about others to feel himself better)
I think is not possible dont say or say lies about where you go, i think is worse then talkin about, and for the family impossible.
If you dont like to talk about or have to think lies, people feel that you have embarassment on this and this increase their curiosity because thei think you have something bad to keep hidden.
There are many good reason to go in phuket is cheap, beautiful and with many opportunities to have fun and is an family place too.
Of course someone can think bad, but only think be reserved is normal in an work environment.
