Bonny,
In your situation I would go for it. Nothing to lose, plenty to gain and a chance to be with the TGF full time (sort of).
Transits thru Perth will be a small hassle to start with but it won't take long to find a mate whose place you camp at as required - not more than 1 night - meanwhile a $60 overnight at a cheap motel on Great Eastern Highway won't break the budget - probably cheaper than the taxi to and fro.
Do the math on this - I'd consider joining the Thai airways Royal Orchid club for cheap food and drink and a way to kill a few inevitable hours waiting at Perth airport - fly BKK to Perth and return and NOT Perth to BKK and return and you might make the $700 (19,000 baht) budget you have in mind once you add the reward flights that points will give you - flights with Thai are direct so no stuffing around at Singapore budget terminal waiting to squeeze back into a Tiger airways seat (I like Tiger but not for a run like this every two weeks!).
Transits through Darwin won't work out cheaper as you would have to fly Perth to Darwin and back with "pang maak maak" Qantas - not much change out of $A600 there.
Okay, there's my thoughts for the last sixty seconds since I read your post - the visa status in Thailand might need a closer look but where there is a will there is a way. Enjoy.
